WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION? The most common reason for breast augmentation in San Francisco is a desire for larger breasts. In general Dr. Cedars does not recommend cosmetic breast augmentation for women under 18 years of age. Many women requesting breast augmentation have lost breast volume after pregnancy and nursing or simply with aging. The operation is done under general anesthetic as an outpatient. An incision is made in one of three locations: 1) Around the lower half of the areola, the pigmented skin that surrounds the nipple; 2) in the armpit; 3) over the bottom portion of the breast. A pocket is created over the location of the breast. The pocket can be immediately deep to the existing breast tissue or else in the next layer deeper, which is behind the chest wall muscle against the ribcage. If you are very thin, the edges of the implant can show through the skin, and vertical ripples on the implant may show in some positions. The implant hides better if it is placed behind the muscle.
